Youth - Cut

All about Tetanus

Tetanus is an acute infection which is caused by a bacteria which gets into cuts and grazes.

The bacteria are found in earth and dirt and are harmless unless they get into the blood stream through the skin. Then they can multiply and produce a nasty poison called a toxin which can cause muscle spasms and affects the nervous system.

It is rare in this country because almost all children are immunised against it when they are babies and again when they are 15.
